Obituary of Patricia Ann Nelson

Patricia A. Nelson Obituary Patricia A. Nelson (Patty) passed away peacefully at home on January 27, 2018 with her family by her side. Patty was 81 years old, born in Rome, NY on September 16, 1936 to the late Canton and Lucille Graham. She was educated in the Rome city school system and a graduate of Rome Free Academy, class of 1954, where she actively participated in basketball and track. She was previously married to the late Carl Nelson in 1958, and through this union they had 4 children Kimberly, Eric, Wendy and Carlese. As an active military family, Patty moved to Columbus, OH, Duluth, MN and then settled back in her hometown of Rome, NY in 1968. Upon returning, Patty became actively involved in Mt. Calvary Baptist Church. She served her church in many capacities as a member of the Young Matrons, the Usher Board, the Missionary, and she assisted with the food pantry. In addition, she was an active member of the NAACP. She worked as an administrative assistant for Madison Oneida County BOCES in Verona, NY for over 35 years before retiring in 2004. In retirement, Patricia enjoyed spending time with family and friends. The treasures of her life were her children and grandchildren as she was affectionally known to many as "Granny". Patricia is survived by three children Kimberly Davis of Rome, NY, Leonard Nelson (Robin) of Savannah, Ga, Wendy Nicholson and her significant other Kenny of Odenton, MD; proceeded in death by Carlese Nelson; a special son David Martin (Daphiene) of Glen Burnie, MD ; two sisters Matilida (Benjamin) Ravenel, Eton (late John) Owens ; one brother Canton Graham, Jr.; Eleven grandchildren, Desiree, Marcus, Richard (Antionette), Courtney, Briana, David, Danielle, Brooke, Corey and Canton, proceeded in death Darnell (Pete); three great grandchildren Amare, Olivia and Aria; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. The family would like to thank Dr. Reo Peniston and staff at Rome Medical Group for the wonderful care given to our mother over the years. We would also like to thank Dr. Scott Brehaut and staff at St. Lukes Hospital, along with the hospice staff for their special care and comfort given to our mother and family during this time. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 3, 2018, at 9:00 A.M. at Mount Calvary Baptist Church, Rome. Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Friday from 4-7 P.M. at Strong-Burns & Sprock Funeral Home 7751 Merrick Road. Interment will take place in Rome Cemetery.
