Obituary of Richard D. Martin
Richard D. Martin, 88, of Rome, NY entered his eternal rest on Saturday January 18,
2025. He was born in Rome on July 16, 1936, to Ellery Uri & Nellie Ade Martin.
He married Helen E. Keniston on October 12,1968 in the First Presbyterian Church in Whitesboro. He graduated from RFA in 1954, MVCC in 1982 & SUNY College of Technology in 1987. He started his working career in 1952 during his high school summer vacation when he worked as an apprentice electrician. He joined the Rome National Guard Unit in 1954 and was stationed at the US Army Armor School, Ft Knox KY, where he completed a four-month armor radio maintenance course and was honorably discharged as a communications man Sgt. E5. He was employed by General Electric and retired after 35 years of dedicated service. In addition, he founded and managed Martins TV Repair Service for 30 years. In his retirement he drove for Bernie Bus Service for 8 years.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Rome. He was also a member of the Baron Stueben Masonic Lodge #264 for over 60 years. He was a previous member of the Westernville cemetery board of directors and provided hands-on cleanup after various storm damage.
In addition to his wife Helen, he leaves two daughters Kimberly Mathy and Carrie (Bruce) Dailey; five grandchildren Bethany (Storm) Noblett; James (Kayla) Mathy; Rebecca, Noah and Sarah Dailey; four great grandchildren Owen, Luca, and Xander Noblett and Elizabeth Mathy.
Calling hours are Thursday January 23, 2025, from 3-7pm at Strong-Burns & Sprock Funeral Home, 7751 Merrick Rd. Rome, NY. and on Friday from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM. A funeral service will follow at 11:30 at the funeral home. A spring burial will be in the Westernville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Restoration Fund of the Presbyterian Church of Rome (PO Box 33 Rome, NY 13442) or a charity of your choice.
