Greg was a great friend and companion. Although we had many great times together, we met faithfully every other week for many years with a few like-minded friends to play fantasy role-playing games and share our stories with each other.
Greg came up with the idea of using a 3D printer to increase the realism of our tabletop games. He purchased a 3D printer and brought many 3D scenes and miniatures with him to The Game each session for us to share. The picture below shows a cutaway fantasy castle that Greg printed on his 3D printer for us. Greg's party stormed, attacked, conquered, made their own, and defended it against all opponents.
To give you some insight into Greg the Gamer I include a short story of one of his many exploits. Here Greg is playing a Sorceress named Kerei:
How Kerei Earned Her Battle Name
"Kerei the Sorceress was having a good day. Following the Ivory Tablet’s translated directions, her party reopened the secret door from the Hall of Nobles and proceeded down a long hallway, presumably to the Well of Vessels. They paused just long enough to recover a healing staff that Sr. Cyrene claimed. At the hallway’s end Hiam discovered and opened a secret door to a chamber containing the Well of Vessels. Kerei devised a clever scheme involving silken ropes, climbers’ kits, and multiple floating discs that delivered her party safely to the Well’s dusty bottom, the Chamber of Vessels, 200` below.
Kerei's party readily located the Four Vessels holding the blood of Immortal Beings. Following her directions, the party eagerly held the Silver Thighbone key and gulped down their Vessels’ contents. Although Kerei’s translation promised each a boon, the Blood instead drained an ability point from each.
The Thighbone then activated, radiating searing cold to all holders but Kerei, who was chosen Wielder. Kerie’s Wielder Sight revealed the location of a door with a matching keyhole. Kerei’s party immediately assumed this was the Door to the Treasure of Xyvera. Overcome with greed as usual, the party rushed forward, disregarding the translation’s warning to “Beware of the Guardian, for he will destroy you if you are not worthy.”
Valla and Hiam stopped to attempt to loot a giant sarcophagus within. But Kerei led Cyrene directly to another door that opened to the Weilders’ key. There they were confronted by Duenrakkar the Guardian, a gigantic Minotaur Savage. Cyrene backed up to cover Kerei’s back and leave room for Valla to engage the Guardian directly. But Valla and Hiam instead wisely elected to fire ranged weapons from a distance, leaving Kerei to confront the Guardian alone. Kerei engaged Duenrakkar in glorious one-on-one combat, firing potent spells of point-blank destruction and receiving horrible punishing blows in return. Cyrene was hard-pressed to keep Kerei healed sufficiently to continue combat, but Kerei never wavered, even when Hiam and Valla left the fight to confront Xyverra newly risen from her tomb, even when Kerei blasted Duenrakkar to ashes only to have Xyverra reconstitute him completely. Eventually Kerei prevailed, and Duenrakkar the Guardian rose no more. Kerei proved herself worthy, indeed.
By custom, one might propose a Battle Name for one’s comrade to commemorate a unique act of heroism. Sister Cyrene immediately proposed the Battle Name “Kerei the Worthy.” Kerei’s friends unanimously agreed that “Kerei the Worthy” was a fitting Battle Name, and Kerei agreed to accept it.
Henceforth “Kerei the Sorceress” shall be known as “Kerei the Worthy” to her comrades in arms."
Rest in peace, Greg. You will always live in the hearts of those who love you.
