Obituary of George H. Whittaker

George H. Whittaker, 82, passed away August 15, 2022. 

He was born on November 15, 1939, in Utica, a son of the late Howard L. and Edith (Parsons) Whittaker. He grew up on the family farm and later enjoyed being the Gentleman Farmer growing sweet corn, haying, and making maple syrup. Picking berries and wild grapes was a family tradition. George graduated from Oriskany Central School, Utica College of Syracuse University and Syracuse University. On July 23, 1966, he was united in marriage to Joyce M. LaSalle. The couple shared 56 years of love and devotion. He retired from Conmed and had previously worked at Univac, Mohawk Data Sciences, and Beehive International in Utah. During his life, George traveled to all seven continents. 

He was past president of American Baptist Men of NYS and their Man of the Year in 2009. He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Rome where he served as treasurer for many years. He also served on the Diaconte, trustees, financial committee, investment council, pastoral search committees, and president of ABMen. George was also a past president of Mohawk Valley Engineer’s Executive Council and a member of American Society of Mechanical Engineers for over 50 years. He loved riding in his 1937 LaSalle, going to NASCAR races or watching them on tv, and eating his favorite desserts. George could be found taking long walks, collecting bottles and cans for church camp. 

He is survived by his wife Joyce; two sons, Bradley (Glenda) of Marcy and Matthew (Tanya) of Marcy; grandchildren, Sarah, Allison, Craig, and James. 

All are invited to call Friday, August 19, 2022, from 4-7pm at Strong-Burns & Sprock Funeral Home, 7751 Merrick Road, Rome. Funeral services will be held at 10am Saturday at the funeral home. He will be laid to rest at Wright Settlement Cemetery.
