Obituary of David G. Sexton
Please share a memory of David to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Dave Sexton, 75, of Floyd, NY, passed away on Saturday, March 21, 2020, at home with his wife and family by his side. Born in Utica, NY on August 1, 1944, he was the son of Gordon and Charlotte (Grems) Sexton. Dave grew up in Floyd and graduated from Holland Patent High School. He joined the Army in 1966 and Served until 1972. Dave was united in marriage to Cheryl Ettinger in a ceremony performed by his cousin, Judge Ralph Grems, in Floyd on July 7, 1994. After his military service, Dave started working at Pettibone which led to an opportunity to meet Bob Oury from Rotec Industry. He started a career as a Construction Engineer at Rotec, where he worked for 49 years making friends that were as close as family; Bruce, Fabian, Paige, and so many others that he worked with throughout the years. Especially, Bobby Stanley, who Dave thought of like a son.
Working at Rotec afforded Dave the opportunity to go to almost every country and all but one state, building bridges and dams. Everyone that worked with Dave learned something from him because of his incredible knowledge. He could design and build anything, recently building a 35 ft swing set for his family to have when he was gone.
Dave is survived by his wife of 25 years, Cheryl (Ettinger) Sexton, and children, Brett Crofford of Rome, NY and Shannon (Brian) Barker of Clinton, NY, and stepson Richard (Ria) Ellinger of San Diego, CA and 7 grandchildren; Kyle, Lucas & TJ Crofford, Scarlett, Brady & Bella Barker, and Bryce Ellinger.
Dave has 2 brothers, James (Judy) Sexton of Camden and Gary (Jelinda) Sexton of Florida, and brother-in-law, Hugh Westcott of Floyd. His in-laws, Suzanne (Ted) Mooney of Rome; Nancy Bruce of Goose Creek, S. Carolina; Kimberly (Gary) Smith of Rome; Christopher Ettinger of Syracuse, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Dave was predeceased by his parents; his brother, Richard Loucks; his sister, Shirley Wescott, his sister and his brother-in-law, Barb and Chuck Hagerman; sister-in-law, Robin Ettinger, and brother-in-law, Timothy Ettinger.
Due to the pandemic our country is currently facing, Dave's family and friends will be invited to attend a Celebration of Life on his birthday, August 1, 2020, at a time to be determined at Townsend Cemetery, Stittville. A Facebook memorial page will be setup in place of a picture board at a funeral, to get a glimpse into what he always called, his "Great Life".
The family would like to thank everyone at Hospice of Oneida County, who were so helpful and kind especially Tracy. Arrangements by Strong-Burns & Sprock Funeral Home, 7751 Merrick Road, Rome, NY 13440.
