Erwin J. Smith
Erwin J. Smith 86, of Rome, passed away at his home, surrounded by his family on June 18, 2019. He was born in Rome, N.Y. on September 30, 1932, a son of the late George and Ann Street Smith. Erwin was a graduate of Saint Aloysius Academy, Class of 1952. He continued his education by attending Utica College. On September 23, 1952, Erwin proudly enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving his country until August 30, 1958. Erwin was united in marriage to Eleanor Washeleski in a ceremony which took place on November 14, 1959, in St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Rome. He was employed by the United States Postal Service of Rome, until his retirement. Erwin enjoyed camping, fishing and gardening. He was an avid Syracuse Football and N.Y. Yankee fan. Erwin was a member of St. Mary's \ St. Peter's Church and former member of the America Legion of Rome.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Eleanor Smith, Rome, three cherished daughters, Lisa (Daryl) Smith, Camden, Laurie Smith (Mark Alexander), Half Moon, N.Y and Leslie (Frank) Petrella, Blossvale; one brother, David (Sharon) Smith, Rome, seven grandchildren, Scott, Christopher, Kelley, Jenna, Jacob, Katie and Sarah; nine greatgrandchildren. Erwin was predeceased by a sister, Betty Munney; two brothers, George and Robert Smith.
The family wishes to thank Home Based Primary Care of Rome and Caregivers of Utica, for the care and compassion they provided to Erwin, especially his nurse Linda Kula and caregiver Carolyn.

Funeral services are private and there are no calling hours. Interment with Military Honors will take place in Evergreen Cemetery, Stokes.
