Obituary of Edward E. Berg

Edward E. Berg On March 26, 2019, the world lost a true hero to his family and his country, for both of which he knew profound love. Edward E. Berg, a lifelong Roman, passed away peacefully after putting up the good fight as he'd done these past 94 years. Born the 30thof August 1924, the son of the late Frederick F. and Agnes A. Priest Berg. After moving to the Town of Lee at the age of 13 and attending two separate one-room schools, it wasn't long before America found herself at war, and on the 27th of March, 1943, Edward volunteered selflessly like so many of his contemporaries and joined the U.S. Army. He served with 5th Army, 7th Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division in the North African, Mediterranean and European Theatres. Battles and campaigns included Sicily, Anzio, Rome-Arno, Naples-Foggia, the Siegfried Line and the Battle of Rhine. He was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star, 2 Purple Hearts, Good Conduct Medal and the NY Conspicuous Service Award. It was after this service that he'd accomplished his greatest feat. He married Helen L. Pickard on the 3rd of August, 1946. This was a union of 63 years until her passing on the 17th of September, 2009. In 1954, Edward and his family entered the wonderful world of camping which lasted over 40 years. Many good friends and fond memories were made during the weekend excursions and summer vacations. Nightly campfires were the greatest. He was a lifelong outdoorsman who especially enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping. He also enjoyed snowmobiling with his family and neighbors. Later on in life, his friends at Pounder Hall would become like a second family and he became known for often cooking up a meal to share with his fellow residents. Following his military service, Ed spent thirty-eight years with Rome Cable Corporation and he was also a member of the Lee Center United Methodist Church. Edward was one of the original founders of the Lee Center American Legion #1794. Edward is survived by his daughters, Kathie (Joseph) Sadlowski, Pensacola, FL, Suzanne Barber, Smithville, TN and Nancy (Paul) Weigandt, Oriskany, NY; along with 10 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. He is predeceased by his sisters; Lillian Payne, Beatrice Hall and Frances Murphy; a twin brother Frederick; a daughter Barbara Berg; and a grandson Mark Sadlowski. Edward's daughter's would like to especially thank the staff and many friends at the Eastern Star for the love and compassion they showed in spades to their dad for many years in their care. They'd also like to thank the Rome VA Clinic and VA Home Care for providing great care. Private graveside services with Military Honors will be held at the convenience of the family.
