George A. Digamus
George A. Digamus, 81, of Westernville, passed away on February 13, 2019, at UPSTATE University Hospital from Pancreatic Cancer. He was born on November 30, 1937, in Glens Falls, N.Y. a son of the late George A. and Marion Gilbert Digamus Sr. After high school, George enlisted in the United States Army serving from 1955-58. He then enlisted in the United States Air Force serving from 1962-68. He continued to work in the Air Force as a civilian up until his retirement. After retiring from the Air Force, he went on to driving school bus for the Holland Patent School District.
George was married to the late Joan Whitbread Bliss. George was a member of the Lee Legion Post #1794 and in his spare time enjoyed gardening, cooking, watching and feeding the birds, hummingbirds and deer, completing his puzzles, woodworking and spending time with his family. Every Sunday, George and his family would enjoy one of his home cooked meals together and then he loved to go to the Legion to see his friends.
He is survived by his sister, Ann Kirby Endwell, N.Y; a daughter, Sharon Digamus, Rome; stepchildren, Brian Bliss, Westernville, Kim Eager, Chittenango and Kelly Nottingham, CO; ten grandchildren, Shandi, Sami, Matt, Cody, Haleigh, Kyle, Katie, Brittany, Brianna and Zack. George was predeceased by a sister Mary Conboy and a brother, David Digamus.
The family wishes to thank the 10th Floor Oncology Unit at SUNY UPSTATE for the wonderful care they provided to George. On Tuesday, February 19, the family is going to have a Celebration of Life for George at Westernville Legion from 5-7PM.
In lieu of Flowers memorial contributions may be made to the National Pancreas Foundation 3 Bethesda Metro Center, Suite 700, Bethesda, Maryland 20814 or to The Upstate Foundation, INC 750 E. Adams St. CAB326, Syracuse, NY 13210.
Funeral services with Military Honors will be held on Monday, February 18, 2019, at 7:00 P.M. at Strong-Burns & Sprock Funeral Home 7751 Merrick Road, Rome. Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 4-7 P.M. prior to the service. Interment will take place in Carmichael Hill Cemetery in the spring.
