George A. Schmitt
George Schmitt 73, of Rome, passed away on September 18, 2018, at Oneida Healthcare Hospital, with his loving wife and caregiver at his side. He was born on October 10, 1944, in Rome N.Y. a son of the late Andrew and Mabel Spink Schmitt. George was employed by Revere Copper and Brass as a Management Foremen, retiring after 39 years of service. On October 3, 1964, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Burdick in St. Peters Church, Rome. After George's retirement, he and Liz moved to North Carolina for 14 years, returning to Rome due to health issues. George was a skilled carpenter who was always working on a project. He was an avid runner and loved spending time with family and friends. His daughters say he was the Best Dad Ever!
He is survived by his beloved wife Elizabeth Schmitt, Rome; three daughters, Sandra Sanzone (Frank), Rome, Christine Johnson (Brett), Rome and JoAnne Schmitt, North Carolina; a brother, Gary Schmitt and wife Susan; four grandchildren, Christopher Maracchion, Amber Johnson, Alexa and Zakary Sanzone and best friends of nearly sixty years, Barbara and Thomas Dowd. George was predeceased by three sisters: Lorriane Platis, Henrietta Judith Fields and Susan Lambert and brothers-in-law, John Platis, Tom Fields and Wendell Lambert.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 22, 2018, at 2:00 P.M. at Strong-Burns & Sprock Funeral Home 7751 Merrick Road, Rome. Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Saturday from 12:00-2:00 P.M. prior to the service. Interment will take place in St. Mary's Cemetery, Clayville.
